What your dog's sleeping position says about them

Dogs can sleep anywhere and in the most peculiar positions. Curled up in a ball, stretched out on their back, or half hanging off the sofa – it often looks funny, but your dog's sleeping position tells you a surprising amount about how they are feeling. In this blog post, we'll tell you more about it!

1. Curled up like a donut

This is one of the most common sleeping positions. Your dog lies tightly curled up with their nose towards their tail.

What does it mean?

This position is instinctive. Dogs protect their belly with it and keep their body warm. It can also mean that your dog feels a little cautious or not fully relaxed, although it's often just comfortable.

2. On their back with paws in the air

One of the cutest and most striking positions.

What does it mean?

This is usually a sign of complete trust and relaxation. The belly is a vulnerable area, so if your dog sleeps like this, they feel safe in their environment.

3. Stretched out on their side

Your dog lies fully stretched out on their side, often with relaxed muscles.

What does it mean?

This is one of the best signs of deep relaxation. Dogs that sleep like this are often in a deep REM sleep and feel completely at ease.

4. The "superman" position

Front legs and hind legs stretched, belly on the ground.

What does it mean?

This position is often seen in young or energetic dogs. It's a kind of quick power nap position: ready to play again immediately.

5. Sleeping against you

Your dog likes to lie close to you or another family member.

What does it mean?

This is pack behavior. Your dog seeks warmth, safety, and connection. It's also a great sign of trust.

6. Sleeping half-sitting

Your dog seems to doze while sitting upright or half-lying.

What does it mean?

This often happens when a dog remains alert, for example in a new environment or if they are not yet fully relaxed.

7. With their head up

Some dogs sleep with their head on a pillow, armrest, or even in the air.

What does it mean?

Often this is just comfort or a favorite position. But it can also mean that your dog wants to be able to react quickly to sounds.

By observing your dog's sleeping position, you can get to know them better. It tells you how safe, relaxed, or alert they feel. And honestly: no matter how they lie... it's always one of the cutest things there is.
